Port dredging is a hot topic in D.C.

Some members of Congress are starting to get antsy about getting East Coast harbors dredged to accommodate post-Panamax ships.

While PortMiami has $77 million in state funding to help launch its project, ports further north are fighting for federal funding.

South Florida port to develop container transfer facility with FEC, install new leader

On Tuesday, the Broward County Commission approved a 30-year lease and operating agreement with Florida East Coast Railway L.L.C. (FEC) to develop an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The facility is slated to become operational at the beginning of 2014.

Steven Cernak, CEO at the Port of Galveston, will be the new leader at Port Everglades, which just gained Broward County Commission approval for a new $72 million Florida East Coast Railway

    FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – More than a dozen years in the works, a new railroad transfer station at Port Everglades is one step closer to reality.

    On Tuesday, the Broward Commission approved a 30-year lease and operating agreement with the Florida East Coast Railway to develop an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) at the port which will allow freight to move more efficiently between South Florida and the southeast United States via rail.

    The facility will become operational at the beginning of 2014.
