A Complete Logistics Solution
The Florida East Coast Railway ('FECR') is a 351-mile freight rail system located along the east coast of Florida. It is the exclusive rail provider to South Florida’s ports and connects with other railway systems to move freight throughout the county. Based in Jacksonville, Florida, FECR provides end-to-end intermodal solutions to customers that demand more cost-effective options without compromising service quality. The scheduled railroad service combines on-time performance with cost competitive rates. Florida East Coast’s drayage operation is provided through FEC Highway Services, which allows FECR to provide truck-like service in the local markets it serves.
FECR’s strong intermodal business is due to it being the exclusive rail provider to PortMiami, Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale), and the Port of Palm Beach. FECR transported 325,000 intermodal shipments in 2010, which accounts for approximately 80 percent of its rail traffic.
FECR also provides carload service and moves commodities such as aggregate (crushed rock), automobiles, bulk liquids, building materials, orange juice, electronics and other items Floridians consume and use everyday.
FECR provides distribution, transloading and warehousing services along the east coast of Florida. FECR is partnering with both PortMiami and Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) to build rail facilities to provide faster and more cost-effective service to intermodal customers. In addition, PortMiami is engaged in the FEC Railway Rail Reconnection Project. The Project has four phases: (1) reconstruction of the Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) Port Lead, (2) rehabilitation of the bascule bridge that connects PortMiami and FECR, (3) the construction of an on-port rail facility, and (4) modifications to FECR’s Rail Yard to accommodate the increase in intermodal traffic. The rail reconnection project is actually part of a larger infrastructure investment program taking place at PortMiami. The other two projects are the PortMiami Access Tunnel and the 50-foot dredge. The PortMiami Access Tunnel is fully financed and construction has begun. The 50-foot dredge project was fully funded in 2011 through a $77 million grant from Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Department of Transportation. This investment program will allow PortMiami to be ready for the Panama Canal expansion in early 2016.
Major capital projects include the reconnection of the railway to the PortMiami which will link to an on-dock rail and Intermodal Container Transfer facility and the development of an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility ('ICTF') adjacent to Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale). Both of these projects will provide the ports with direct access to the FECR rail network and its intermodal terminals.
The South Florida Logistics Center will save time and money for shippers by reducing drayage costs, optimizing inventory positions, and providing synergistic supply chain opportunities. The unique multi-modal logistics center will transform the way freight is moved into and out of South Florida.
FECR’s intermodal business consists of several key services:
- The “Threads / Piedmont Express” service from Charlotte to South Florida
- The "Peachtree-Sunshine Express" service from Atlanta to South Florida
- The "Beeline Express" that offers an import/export container solution for vessels discharging at South Florida ports.
- The “Facilitator” service that provides international customers Port-to-Port service from Miami to Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina.
- The “Savannah Relay” service that provides over-the-road carriers a cost-effective alternative to move products into the Central and South Florida markets. This service allows customers to drop loaded trailers and pick-up empty trailers in Savannah, Georgia.
