August 16, 2017Florida East Coast Railway Urges Caution During Solar Eclipse August 21st
JACKSONVILLE, Fla (August 9, 2017) – The first total solar eclipse in almost 40 years will take place Tuesday, August 21st. The event will be visible throughout Florida, including along Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway’s 351 miles of track.
FEC urges all eclipse viewers to exercise caution and reminds everyone to stay off and away from all railroad tracks during the event. Do not walk on or alongside the tracks and do not congregate near tracks during the event. As always, pedestrians should only cross at designated railroad crossings, and drivers should never try to beat the train.
Remember, an oncoming freight train can take more than a mile to come to a complete stop. This makes it nearly impossible to avoid colliding with individuals, groups or vehicles in its path. Rail cars often overhang up to six feet on either side of the track, making it a dangerous area as well.
“We hope everyone enjoys this spectacular event safely and responsibly.”
FEC will continue to operate normal train schedules throughout the day. The impact to visibility in Florida will begin around 1:15pm and will continue into the late afternoon.
“We are 100% committed to being the safest railroad in the industry and work to protect our employees, customers, suppliers and the communities we operate within,” says Jim Hertwig, President and CEO, FEC Railway.
